Brussels: Press(ure) Ahead Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia News Agency)

Anyone who hasn't heard EU calls on Bulgaria to press ahead with corruption and crime combat? I doubt it, especially after Sofia faced on Monday fresh pressure with the start of a busy week of meetings with EC officials. "The jury is still out" was the message of the meetings of the EC director general for enlargement in Sofia and those of the EU commissioner for enlargement in Brussels. Without a word from Michael Leigh or Olli Rehn about the tone of the upcoming report on Bulgaria's preparedness, it is more than clear that pressure over Bulgaria will not ease. Brussels sees this as an "encouragement" for the EU-aspirant, Sofia - as an uphill battle. But without a single person convicted for the murders in the raging turf war and without a single case of prosecuted high-level corruption, it is no secret that Sofia is impotent even now, in the last mile for 2007 entry, to press ahead and heal its Achilles' heel alone. Hopefully we see real results by the middle of June, when European leaders are expected to rule on the exact date of Bulgaria's entry. Anyone dare a guess?
