Win The Women's Day Battle

Celebrations are meant to be a fun and positive experience. Ironically, there is this holiday that cherishes the gentlest and loveliest creatures of all (at least some poets say so), yet often turns into a social and psychological warfare.

Yup, it's the Women's Day.

It makes gents uneasy, most ladies end up nervous and displeased with how they are treated, while the media spray out confusing messages on what the holiday's all about.

Should men invite their girlfriends/ wives to dinner and buy presents? Isn't it more of a mother's thing, not a day for romance? Should they buy costly lingerie and bling-bling or a red rose and a card would do the job?

Should the guy give her flowers in the morning, or in the evening, or send them over to the office to make sure that all of her colleagues know she's appreciated? By the way, since it's Women's Day, aren't women the one that should make reservations and invite a man over...

There are, of course, women who don't expect the world on March 8. Then again, there are probably some who think they should be showered with compliments and pricey presents, and if the chap doesn't get the message, she'll sulk and irritate the socks off him. And what about the mother-in-law, she probably expects some attention, too, like a phone call or even flowers!

All those questions might sound like a cliche. But even if it isn't always THAT bad, generally it is a messy, messy holiday.

If you're lucky enough to feel confident about the right steps - congratulations! But in any case it won't hurt to check out our suggestions on how to avoid holiday drama with the different ladies in your life:

MOM
She's always worth the effort. Giving her a phone call is a must; you get extra points for flowers or a small souvenir.

GIRLFRIEND/ WIFE
She might say she doesn't care about Women's Day. Don't listen! Even if she really didn't care, in the next few days all of her pals will brag about what presents they got and about that fancy restaurant HE took them to. If you don't want your girl to feel humiliated and give it back to you hot and strong, take her out and bring some gift. Any housework appliances are strongly inadvisable.

COLLEAGUES
Whatever attention you decide to give, females in your office should receive equal portions. Don't buy flowers for the cuter types while totally ignoring that feminist freak that only sleeps with her laptop. There is actually a risk that she'll laugh in your face, but that's her problem. Yours is how to be polite.

NASTY NEIGHBOUR
Yes, she calls the police when your stereo is too loud, and tittle-tattles behind your back every time you return to your apartment after midnight. Try to give a simple greeting if you walk past her as you get to your car in the morning. However, if she's been really, really, really mean - leave a cactus and a ticket to Africa at her door, with a message saying that some flowers actually grow better in the desert.

YOUR EX
If the two of you have broken up a while ago and managed to stay friends, give her a call. That's it. One word for red roses, teddy bears and chocolate - foolish!

YOUR FRIEND'S EX
Now that's a cutie, and she's single...why not stop by with a bottle of wine and a pack of flavoured condoms? If you are THAT stupid, you probably can't even read, so any advice in this article would be pointless.
