The Parliament of Kosovo elected Friday Fatmir Sejdiu from the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo (DSK) for new President of Kosovo. After three rounds of secret vote, Fatmir Sejdiu, the sole candidate for President, won 80 votes in favor, 12 against, while 17 ballots were invalid. According to Kosovo's constitutional framework, the President of Kosovo can be elected with 2/3 majority of votes out of the total 120 deputies, or by simple majority of 61 vote. Fatmir Sejdiu, the DSK's Secretary General, takes up the position of the late Ibrahim Rugova. The election paved the way for UN-sponsored talks on the province's future status. Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry welcomes the election of Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu on Friday. "We believe that the election will contribute to the stability in Kosovo and to taking the necessary steps for the implementation of the democratic standards specified by the international community", the press release added.
