BULGARIAN SUCCESS AT AUSTRALIAN OPEN CONTINUES

The Bulgarian tennis player Magdalena Maleeva, seeded 13th, defeated Kveta Hrdlickova from the Czech Republic with 6-4, 7-5 in the women's singles matches on the third day of the 8.6 million U.S. dollars Australian Open tennis tournament at Melbourne Park on Wednesday. She qualified for the second round after defeating Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian from Switzerland with 6-3, 6-4. Maleeva’s next rival is Lisa Raymond from the United States placed under number eighteen in the seeding. On the second round the American beat Jill Craybas, United States, 6-3, 6-3. Yevgeny Kafelnikov brought one of the biggest surprised at tournament. He lost 6-3 7-5 6-3 to qualifier Alex Kim Wednesday in a shock defeat that left the Australian Open without any of the top five seeds in round three for the first time in its 97-year history. Fifth seed Sebastien Grosjean lost to Francisco Clavet 6-4 3-6 6-0 5-7 6-4 earlier Wednesday. The result leaves Britain's Tim Henman, at six, the highest seed left in a draw featuring less familiar names in unfamiliar rounds.
