Fifty actors from the National Theatre signed an open letter to Parliament and the Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg, in which they say that the former theatre director Alexander Morfov is the natural leader of the academic troupe. 'We think that he's the only possible candidate for the future cause of the National Theatre', the actors wrote. In the letter the actors insist the parliament to discuss the program of Morfov for the future development of the theatre, because the Ministry of Culture has demonstrated “narrow views and abilities.” The contract of Morfov as managing director of the National Theatre expired on December 31, 2001. In early January, 2002 the Minister of Culture appointed Plamen Markov to the position.
