Bulgarian athletes and sportspeople bearing the name of St. Atanas gathered Wednesday in Sofia's Vassil Levski stadium to celebrate their name-day.

With chocolates, a glass of champagne, and wishes for health and success throughout the year, namesakes from the fields of basketball, athletics, and soccer celebrated their shared holiday.

Former basketball national Atanas Golomeev related how years ago he was severely injured during a game exactly on this day. A player from the opposing team tripped him and he flew so his leg hit the ring, Golomeev said.
