Seven people have been killed and five wounded in an explosion at a coal mine in south-west Romania. The blast occurred early on Saturday morning at the mine in Anina in Caras Severin county. The injured miners are in a serious condition and had been rushed to hospital, a county official, Petre Seres, said as quoted by the AFP news agency. Some 200 people working in the mine at the time of the explosion had been evacuated. An investigation has begun into the blast, which officials say may have been caused by gas leak.
