Parties, Fireworks Usher in 2006 to Bulgaria

Lavish firework displays and huge street parties have been marking the start of 2006 across Bulgaria.

From Sofia to Varna, Russe to Plovdiv, crowds of people have been cheering in the incoming New Year.

Thousands of people thronged the streets just next to Sofia's largo, where the offices of the Presidency and the Council of ministers are located.

At Sofia's Batenberg Square, fireworks burst above the packed crowds, screaming and revelling in the first minutes of the New Year.

In Varna, the country's sea capital, people revelled in the mild weather and the all-glittering streets of the city.

No serious outbreaks of unrest were reported by police.

Meanwhile doctors have been reporting on a bulging number of people injured by manual fireworks. Pirogov Emergency Institute has so far hospitalized 25 adults and three children injured by fireworks.

The first Bulgarians to meet 2006 were seafarers at the newest marine vessel of the country Trapezitza. They welcomed the New Year with sparkling champagne ten hours earlier than their country fellowmen, while sailing near the coast of Australia on Saturday.
