US President George Bush has authorized new cuts in US combat troops in Iraq, below the 138,000 level that prevailed for most of this year, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said. Speaking to troops in Falluja, Rumsfeld did not specify a number but said the US force would be cut by two brigades - several thousand staff. Further reductions will be considered "at some point in 2006", he said. The move will take the number of US soldiers to below the 138,000 level, seen for most of this year.
