Westerner Hostages in Iraq Face Death as Deadline Expires

World | December 10, 2005, Saturday // 00:00

The deadline set by the kidnappers of four Western captive peace activists in Iraq expires Saturday, bringing death closer. Originally the group of kidnappers, calling itself the Swords of Righteousness, threatened to kill the four Western hostages unless their demands are met by December 8, but then extended the deadline. Norman Kember, 74, of London, Tom Fox, 54, of Clear Brook, Va., and the Canadians James Loney, 41, and Harmeet Singh Sooden, 32, were taken hostage in Baghdad two weeks ago. They were working for the Christian Peacemaker Teams, an antiwar group. The kidnappers demanded that all prisoners in U.S. and Iraqi detention centers are released.
