Oxy(morons)

Since Tuesday an old yet lively oxymoron has once again started hovering amid the air of Bulgaria's fictitious political prosperity. A senseless word combination born by the depths of the wholesale rightist political body's infinite genius- United Democratic Forces (UtDF).

However proud the name sounds, it makes no sense. At least it hasn't for quite some time now, since for the last couple of years Bulgaria has witnessed anything but unity on the part of its self-proclaimed democrats. I shall hereby refer to the latter using the term "rightists" in order not to confuse them their US namesakes.

So, here's a very concise overview of the split among the country's rightwingers.

The Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) began whittling itself into petite pieces over petty issues of gain and pride. Key figures like former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov and former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski (the latter is now among Bulgaria's observers to the European Parliament) left on a quest for political longevity and wellbeing by forming factions on their own.

What was left of the UDF allied itself with a number of, by common opinion, godforsaken parties, thus becoming the UtDF. Since then, it has suffered a number of major failures.

Yet again have the rightists attempted to defy both sound reason and the sense behind their name. On Tuesday they tried to engineer a not-so-well designed political divorce with two of their pre-election allies, the Democratic Party and a Roma minority alliance. The grounds cited were seemingly serious-incompatibility of positions. The divorce, as any other such occasion, was naturally accompanied by a bit of brawling. The leader of one of the two seduced and forsaken factions announced that UDF had no right to expel anyone from the yoke of marriage.

However, if the trend of UDF members peeling themselves or being peeled into bits and pieces inside the vast Bulgarian
political arena continues, right-wingers stand no chance against their ultimate rivals, the ruling Socialists. Besides, rightist
minutiae risk turning themselves eventually into politics' morons-the ones who had it all and lost it out of small-mindedness.
