For the first time ever, Bulgaria born conceptual artist Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude exhibited more than sixty posters in his home country.
The biggest and most representative exhibition of the world-famous artists in Bulgaria is housed at gallery "Academy" with the National Art Academy. Its official opening on November 22 drew tens of art lovers.
Each of the sixty-two prints of pictures, collages and photographs displayed have been personally signed by Christo in Bulgarian. Arranged thematically and chronologically, they cover the development of the legendary couple since the end of the fifties till their USD 20 M art project "The Gates" at the beginning of 2005.
Christo is alumnus of the academy that still keeps some of his student-time sketches. He accepted the invitation by dean Bozhidar Yonov, and agreed to help with the renovation of the school's building.
Christo announced that the profit from selling his posters during the exhibition would go for the renovation.
As a special treat Christo and his wife - Jeanne-Claude offered that the poster for the exhibition features a sketch of their new project - "Over the River". The extravagant couple intends to hang huge canvases over the Arkansas River in the state of Colorado, US. The canvases should follow the river's path and create an aesthetic flow of light winding through bridges, rocks, and trees. The project will cost USD 21 M, and the couple spent nine years planning it.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who is French, are known for their large-scale public art pieces. They surrounded 11 islands in Miami with pink woven fabric in 1982, wrapped silver fabric around the German Reichstag in 1995 and opened 3,100 umbrellas in Japan and California in 1991.
