Hole in the Sea

A trial in court. After a long and elaborated speech on the part of the defendant's lawyer, the judge turns to the plaintiff.

"So, are you sure this man stole your car," he asks, pointing at the defendant. "Your Honor, I am no longer sure I ever had a car in the first place," the plaintiff replies.

Again, a lousy joke has turned into an even lousier reality in Bulgaria. A luxurious car was stolen in Germany and seized in Bulgaria on its way to being sold or dissembled in Turkey. So far so good.

But are the true owners ever to obtain their car again? It seems, to say the least, hardly probable, at least not without Bulgarian court taking them to hell and back. For those that don't get the problem, read below.

After Bulgarian authorities seized the car and extradited the thief, the very bright Slivnica prosecutor's office decided the vehicle should be claimed by the state, as it was illegally imported.

Naturally, the even brighter court representatives confirmed the prosecutor's ruling. Thus, they left the vehicle in good, honest hands - these of a judge. Yes, you got it all right - a Bulgarian judge is driving the fancy stolen car.

In the meantime, the owners are reported to have been continuously referred from one state institution to another.

In other words, Bulgaria's judiciary has sent them on the task of digging a hole in the sea, thus once again demonstrating its own barrenness. And the fact that a solution of the stolen vehicle problem is promised to emerge in February, 2006 is of doubtless relief and value. By February the owners might have forgotten they ever had a car.

The European Union, having Bulgaria desperately banging on its door, has warned the state time and again concerning the gaps in the judiciary, urging for immediate reforms.

Alas, the state has so far failed to comprehend the warnings, giving Germany and Angela Merkel one more reason to remain skeptical about the country's accession.
