France Counters Riots with Curfews

World | November 8, 2005, Tuesday // 00:00

The French government has decided to give the authority to introduce curfews to regional police, in order to stop the riots in the country that have lasted for 12 nights. The decision came after the rioting continued for yet another night, setting 1,173 cars on fire in 226 towns, Sky news reported. One person already fell victim of the rioting yesterday, when he died of his wounds after a severe beating earlier in the previous week. The violence was set off by the deaths of two youths in the rundown Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, who were accidentally electrocuted at an electricity sub-station after reportedly fleeing police. Brussels, Berlin, and Bremen witnessed similar cases of setting cars and buildings on fire, that are believed to have been inspired by the situation in Paris, and fears of all-out rioting are rising in Europe.
