In her first game from the tournament the young Bulgarian defeated WTA star Vera Zvonareva of Russia 7-5, 6-3. Under the preliminary program Sesil had to face 5th seeded Patty Schnyder, who withdrew over injury.

Now the teenager will face the winner from the match between Kveta Peschke and Jill Craybas.

Among the favorites for the tile are players like Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, last year's winner Amelie Mauresmo and Russia's Elena Dementieva.
