The first in Bulgaria catacomb grave has been unearthed by an archeological expedition headed by Boris Borissov from the Veliko Tarnovo university.

The unique finding is situated near the Troyanovo North mine, part of the Maritsa east complex.

The grave was dated back to the end of the IVth or the beginning of the Vth century AC and most probably belonged to the nomad people Alans or Sarmats, Borissov says. He described the finding as a sensation as so far no evidence of the presence of these tribes in Bulgaria has been found.

The finding is similar to the tombs of the tribes of the Alans or the Sarmats discovered in Southern Russia and Ukraine.
