Bulgarian top racket Magdalena Maleeva announced she decided to end her career after the Fed Cup match against Japan in July.
"I quit and its final," Maleeva told a press conference on Sunday. "I took the decision as early as July after the Federal Cup match against Japan. I was positive the end is near just because I did not feel like playing any more."
"After nearly thirty years on the tennis court and so many games it seemed like I didn't care much whether I win or lose. I didn't have enough energy and motivation to keep going," Maleeva said.
The most prospering of the Maleeva tennis family officially retired Thursday after a defeat at the Zurich Open. The Bulgarian ace was defeated by Patty Schnyder.
Magdalena's older sisters Manuela and Katerina had already quit their playing careers as well.
The Maleeva sisters, coached by mother Yulia Berberyan, had been part of the word's professional tennis since 1982.
Now the family have their own sporting complex and Sofia, while Magdalena has also established a women's fashion company.
