Bulgaria Launches Orthodox Radio

Society | October 19, 2005, Wednesday // 00:00

The first Bulgarian Orthodox radio will has started airing on-line early Wednesday morning.

"Sion" radio is broadcasted by the Ruen Monastery bearing the name of renowned saint Ivan Rilski - the Miracle worker, who is commemorated yearly on October 19.

The programme of the radio will start with the national anthem every day at 8:30 a.m. The emissions would only be broadcast online for a while and would last from 8:30 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 18:00 local time.

The limitations are due to the fact that the monastery has no electricity and the computers and studios are being powered by a generator that cannot handle heavy loading.

"Sion" radio will not broadcast advertisements and will be funded by donations and projects.

Ruen Monastery initiated the launch in an effort to disseminate Orthodox knowledge and preserve Bulgarian traditions.
