Closing two reactors of Bulgaria's nuclear power plant will boost the electricity price by 56%, it emerged in Parliament Tuesday.

The planned shutdown of units 3 and 4 is a European Union (EU) requirement in order to accept Bulgaria as a full member.

The reactors should stop functioning by 2006, although experts have said they were safe enough to keep working for several more years.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria's deputy energy minister, cited by Darik Radio, says it is possible to renew talks with the EU, and try to extend the deadline for closing the units.

Yordan Dimov took part in Tuesday's session of the energy commission in Parliament. It was focused on the safety of the Kozloduy plant, and preparations for the winter season.
