Rescue workers have continued to recover bodies from under the mudslides which killed at least 49 people in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro on Christmas Eve. State governor Antony Garotinho said the toll would be even higher, because many bodies were still trapped under the mud and debris. The deluge, which began on Sunday night, triggered mudslides that swept away scores of flimsy shacks built on steep slopes. Some 1,300 people have been left homeless, and about 20 people are still missing.
