December 25, 2001, Sofia - The U.S. Embassy has been asked to announce that the first phase of the Operation Enduring Freedom humanitarian mission has been successfully accomplished. This phase included the air drops of food and other assistance to Afghan populations in need. The humanitarian assistance will continue via surface transportation via truck and similar convoys.

International, non-governmental, and other humanitarian relief agencies and institutions are now able to provide needed aid to the Afghan people on a continuing basis.

Bulgaria's assistance played a substantial role in the efficacy of the humanitarian mission. Now that humanitarian ground transport is possible, and in coordination with the Government of Bulgaria, the refueling mission based at Burgas International Airport has ended.

We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Bulgaria on similarly important military missions in the future. The crews who worked in Burgas especially thank their Bulgarian colleagues and the citizens of Burgas for their cooperation and hospitality.
