Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has won a smashing reelection victory on Sunday. Opinion polls gave Koizumi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) a 20%-lead over its main rival, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and an outright majority of 296 seats in the 480-seat Lower House. That was a strong gain over the 212 he entered the election with, and his party's second-best showing in its history. The win will allow him to govern even without the support of his junior coalition partner, the Buddhist-based New Komeito party. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said he felt a "good response" from voters seeing the election as a referendum on his reform program, which was blocked by rebels within his own party.
