Bulgarians joined the world Monday to mark one of the major Christian holidays - the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

According to Christian tradition the body and soul of Mary, the mother of Jesus was taken into Heaven after the end of her earthly life.

The Assumption is important to many Christians as the Virgin Mary's heavenly birthday (the day that Mary was received into heaven).

All those bearing the name of Mariya, Marin, Mariela, etc. have a holiday today.
