The Irish Republican Army (IRA) published a long-awaited statement saying they would end their armed campaign. Clandestine units will not formally disband but were ordered to place their weapons in arms dumps and cease all activities. "This is what we have striven for and worked for throughout the eight years since the Good Friday Agreement," British Prime Minister Tony Blair has commented. The republican Northern Ireland organization was supposed to have disarmed fully by mid-2000. However, they did not start the process until October 2001 and insisted that any details of its partial disarmament be kept secret.
