"It is unlikely that the new government will be able to live up to all the expectations the people have. But the economic political road the government has taken, is the right one", Lambsdorff, Count Dr. Otto Lambsdorff, former German federal Minister of Economics said at a press conference on December 18.

“I am not here to quickly tell you how things should be done. I came here to gather information about Bulgaria and more to listen than to speak. The governments' political proposals are the right ones," the official explained.

In his speech Dr. Lambsdorff underlined that the way to EU accession and raising prosperity is bound to lead to compromises. He also touched upon the issue of corruption in Bulgaria. Stressing the importance of fighting corruption so that foreign investors will feel secure.

"Bulgaria has to take action itself and shouldn't rely too much on others. The way to EU accession will require a great deal of effort. Bulgaria should not only do this in order to gain EU accession but especially to get its own affairs in order.

Dr. Lambsdorff praised the friendliness, openness and willingness to cooperate on behalf of all the people he met during his visit. Count Dr. Otto Lambsdorff ended his working visit to Bulgaria with the press conference held at the German embassy on December 18.

During his visit Dr. Lambsdorff had meetings with Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg and several other government officials. In the press conference Dr. Lambsdorff underlined the fact that he is no longer an active politician or German MP and visited Bulgaria in his capacity as chairman of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
