Regional initiative is one of the elements to stimulate Balkan countries on their way to the EU integration, This was the motto which united the participants in the international conference in Belgrade entitled “Effects and prospects of regional initiatives in Southeastern Europe”. The forum marked the final phase of a succession of regional projects initiated by the Serb European Movement in cooperation with nongovernmental organizations and research institutes from Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and Macedonia. Bulgaria was represented by the Institute for Market Economy. In his report the Bulgarian Ambassador Yani Milchakov talked about the necessary balance between the isolation problems in the region and globalization processes. Among the important factors for a new type of regional cooperation Ambassador Milchakov pointed out the realization that the post-communist countries cannot guarantee their security, democracy and economic development apart from EU and NATO integration.
