Festivities in the Bulgarian town of Sopot have started Saturday afternoon to celebrate the 155th anniversary from the birth of famous Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov.

The country's president Georgi Parvanov has attended the celebrations. He has handed an award to Bulgarian history books writer Vera Mutafchieva.

The jury from the Sopot Council chose to award Mutafchieva for her overall contribution to Bulgarian literature, culture and society.
