Baseball, Softball Axes from Olympics Program

Sports | July 8, 2005, Friday // 00:00

The International Olympic Committee has axed baseball and softball from the 2012 London Olympics.

They are the first sports to be removed from the Olympics since polo in 1936.

Members also overwhelmingly rejected bids from squash and karate to be added to the Olympic program.

The other candidates - golf, rugby and inline skating - did not make it to a vote.

This means the number of Olympic sports in 2012 will be limited to 26, two less than the maximum possible.
