Romanian Government Resigns

Romanian Premier Calin Tariceanu announced Thursday the resignation of his government, opening the way to early elections. "We are returning to voters again, by handing in the government's resignation," Tariceanu said as cited by the CNN. "With the justice reform process at a half, we do not stand a chance to get a favourable monitoring report enabling Romania to join the EU on January 1, 2007," the outgoing Premier has said in a written statement. His move comes after on Wednesday Romania's Constitutional Court blocked justice reform, which is seen as essential to the country's EU accession. The reform has already been passed by Parliament. Romania is scheduled to enter the bloc in the beginning of 2007, together with Bulgaria. But both countries face a delay in case they fail to implement crucial reforms.
