The Live 8 global concert event kicked off Saturday, with an estimated audience of five billion.

Shows opened in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Johannesburg, Rome, Berlin, Moscow and Barrie, in Canada.

The impressive event aims to put pressure on political leaders to tackle poverty in Africa.

Artists such as James Brown, Dido, The Cure, Craig David, Green Day, Chris De Burgh, Zucchero, Destiny's Child, Jay-Z and Duran Duran went onstage.
