Bulgarian actor Hristo Mutafchiev, mostly known for his comedy roles, became the new chairman of the Bulgarians Artists Union.

Mutafchiev garnered 60 votes in the competition with colleague Vesselin Rankov, who was backed by 40 members of the Union.

The newly-elected chairman pledged to turn the BAU into a respected organization, which will be a negotiating partner to the Social and the Culture Ministries.

Hristo Mutafchiev owes his popularity mainly to the "Danube Bridge" and "Clinic on the Third Floor" soap operas, shown on Bulgarian TV.

He is also a popular advertisement face, and has been featured in several music videos.
