EU Relaxes Ukrainian Visa Regime

The European Union (EU) will relax its visa procedures for Ukrainian citizens, starting form September, said Tuesday Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleh Rybachuk. He made the announcement after the ninth session of the Council for Cooperation between EU and Ukraine in Luxemburg. EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana said Ukrainians would be able to receive visas under the relaxed procedures from the beginning of Fall 2005. Contrary to expectations, however, EU did not grant Ukraine the position of a market economy country. Earlier this year the country abolished visitor visas for EU countries and Switzerland for the period between May 1 and September 1, 2005. The reason was what the Ukrainian government designed as an experiment to show the open nature of the country's society.
