The coach of the Bulgarian national football team has reportedly been invited to head Greek Olympiakos, a team that was led to the league and cup double this season.
Hristo Stoitchkov has been one of those tipped for a coach of the Greek first-division soccer champion, Croatian newspaper Sportske novosti reported, citing sources in Athens.
Bulgarian Trud Daily reports that Stoitchkov declined the invitation, saying his contract with the Bulgarian Football Union is still in force.
Serb coach Dusan Bajevic, 56, arguably the most successful coach in the history of Greek club soccer, left Olympiakos on June 1 over discords with the team's Brazilian stars Rivaldo and Giovanni.
In the meantime Hristo Stoitchkov declared his intention not to resign from the national football club in the aftermath of the defeat from Croatia that dashed Bulgaria's chances to qualify for the World Cup finals in Germany.
"True, I feel disappointed that some of the players failed to be up to my expectations," Stoitchkov wrote in his column in the Spanish "El Mundo deportivo".
"But it is also true that 40,000 fans gave a standing ovation to the team despite the defeat."
"This is what gives me the strength to stay and move on."
