Bulgaria has blown off a late comeback by Poland on Friday to finish fifth at the PetroChina KunLun Cup China International Women's Volleyball Tournament with a crushing 3-1 win.
The 10th-ranked team in the world, Poland fell behind 9-5 in the fourth set, cut Bulgaria's lead to 16-15 with three blocks by Mroz, and then faded, succumbing 25-20 to waste a third set pulling back of 25-16. They had lost the first two 25-22, 25-19.
Eventually, both sides seemed exhausted at their last match of the five-day tournament, as the points from Bulgaria and Poland exchanged to mount up with just errors from the opposite, and Poland, who awoke earlier in attacking, spiked the last two to close the set.
Bulgarians, who failed to qualify for last August's Athens Olympic Games, overcame Dominican Republic 3-1 in Thursday's 5th-7th playoffs to set up Friday's match against the Polish side who finished third at the four-team Group A after beaten by China and Japan.
