Saad, the son of slain former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, is headed for a landslide election victory in Beirut. Voters however denied Saad al-Hariri the high turnout he sought in Lebanon's first general election in three decades with no Syrian troops in the country. Even before the vote began on Sunday, nine of the city's 19 seats had gone uncontested to nominees of Saad, a 35-aged businessman thrust into politics by the February 14 killing of his father, who served several terms as prime minister. Saad called for a high turnout but the response was tepid.
