“Bulgaria wishes to be acceded to the European Union by 2004,” is the title of an interview with Bulgarian Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg published by the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Stellenmarkt on December 12. The interview was published on the occasion of Saxe-Coburg’s visit to Germany, which starts on December 13. “ It depends on us whether we will be ready and that is why it is not right to claim in advance that we will not succeed, “ the Bulgarian Prime Minister commented on EU commissioner for enlargement Guenther Verheugen’s statement that it is extremely improbable that Bulgaria and Romania conclude the negotiations with EU by next year. According to Saxe-Coburg, the Cabinet’s main goal is as fast as possible EU accession and the ministers work for the achievement of that task. He added that Bulgaria wishes to join the EU by 2004. The Bulgarian Prime Minister underscored that EU membership is absolute priority for the Bulgarian Government and assessed French Foreign Minister’s Vedrine statement for simultaneous accession of all EU candidate states as very interesting and important for Bulgaria. Saxe-Coburg expressed his conviction that Bulgaria will be invited for NATO membership at the Prague NATO summit next year. “ I do not expect difficulties in my work with President-elect Parvanov. Bulgaria is not the first country where in the governance different political forces participate and interact,” Saxe-Coburg said.
