Schroeder Faces Key Election Test

Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, is holding elections that may result in the end of 39 years of Social Democrat (SPD) rule there. The opposition conservatives have exploited local economic issues such as the huge unemployment in the state. A poor showing in the poll would add to the pressure on Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, whose SPD party is lagging behind in the national polls. The vote is also seen as a bellwether for next year's general election.
