Russia's team of CSKA (Moscow) won Wednesday evening the UEFA Cup, becoming the first Russian club to win the prestigious cup.

The team made a history 3:1 defeat over Sporting Lisbon.

The result made CSKA the first Russian club to win a European title and Sporting one of only three teams to lose a European final at their own ground, joining Juventus and AS Roma.

Daniel Carvalho, who set up all three goals, was named man of the match.

"We knew Sporting would start strong in front of their own fans, so for the first 20 minutes we had to be careful and defensive to slow them down," Coach Valery Gazzayev said. "In the second half, we had to correct our midfield and we became more offensive."

Cheering crowds poured into the streets of Moscow last night to celebrate CSKA's victory, forcing the police to close downtown streets to traffic.
