Lidia Shuleva, Deputy Prime Minister and Social Minister, sent a letter to the International Monetary Fund Resident Representative to Bulgaria Piritta Sorsa, in which she insists that the ordinance for regulating the salaries in monopoly-holding companies be reduced. The Bulgarian Telecommunications Company is one such company. The announcement was made at the consultative meeting, organized by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) on the company’s problems. The salaries in the Bulgarian Telecom have not been raised since 1998, while its profit has risen from BGN 80 M to BGN 200 M. Nikolay Nikolov, Deputy Transport Minister, said that the privatization will lead to lay-offs. The CITUB insists that staff be reduced if people retire or leave voluntarily. The syndicate also suggested that the layed-off be granted part of the revenues from BTC privatization or the pre-accession funds of the EU as compensation.
