Bulgarian Football Club Picks Ill-Famed Honorary President

Sports | May 13, 2005, Friday // 00:00

Bulgaria's heavyweight Levski FC have chosen controversial Russia-born businessman Chorny to be their Honorary President, media said Friday.

Michael Chorny, who used to own the club, faced a ban from entering Bulgaria in 2000 on suspicion of money laundry. The ban was later lifted but yet Chorny is now allowed only a short stay in the country, and is obliged to enter and leave its territory through different checkpoints.

The Israeli businessman withdrew from Levski in the beginning of 2005.

But the club acknowledged his significant contribution to the development of Levski, and said they would not have survived without his financial support.

Levski CEO Konstantin Bazhdekov was cited as saying that Chorny remained a fan of the team, and would be helpful when possible.
