Insurgents armed with machines guns and rocket-propelled grenades ambushed a police checkpoint in Baghdad this morning, killing five policemen and wounding one, an official said. The latest attack raised the death toll to at least 70 since Friday after a fresh wave of violence erupted in a bid to deflate hopes in Washington and Baghdad that the installation of the nation's first democratically elected government would curb the attacks. Today's ambush took place on a small road near Diala Bridge in eastern Baghdad. At 6.15am, a pick-up truck stopped near the checkpoint and insurgents jumped out and opened fire, joined by other militants who had been hiding behind nearby trees.
