Putin Deprecates USSR Collapse

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the 20th century. In his annual state of the nation address to the parliament, Putin said the break-up was a "real drama" that left tens of millions of Russians outside the Russian Federation. The President also promised a fairer media and less corrupt government. He also said Russia must develop as a "free and democratic" country.
