Turkish Cypriot Government Resigns

The government of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in northern Cyprus resigned today, making way for Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat to take over as president. Talat, 53, was elected president in elections on April 17, replacing the breakaway state's 81-year-old founder, Rauf Denktash. Denktash accepted Talat's resignation today, a formality that allows him to take over the presidency in a ceremony tomorrow. Denktash did not run in the election.
