The bodies of more than 50 men, women and children have been found in the Tigris River in Iraq, officials said Thursday.

The gruesome discovery was made in the town of Siwayra, south of Baghdad.

The bodies apparently belong to the victims of killings in the town of Madain. It had been reported to be in the hands of militant Sunni insurgents earlier this month, and on Monday governemtn forces moved in and took control.

According to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, dozens had been seized hostages, slaughtered and then thrown into the Tigris.

World media cited policemen as saying that there were many children among the victims.

"We discovered bags with the slaughtered children inside them," officer Riyadh Sakhi told al-Arabiya.

Another mass killing had shocked Iraq earlier, when at least 19 men were found dead at a football stadium in the town of Haditha, north-west of Baghdad.
