A total of 625 white, green and red balloons were flown into the sky above Sofia on Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister Plamen Panayotov and the children from Sofia's 22nd "G.S. Rakovski" school flew the balloons to mark the patronal festival of the school.

The number of the balloons shows the remaining days to Bulgaria's EU entry.

The European Parliament approved Wednesday the admission of Bulgaria to the European Union, paving the way for the signature of EU accession treaty later this month.

Romania and Bulgaria's target date for EU entry is January 1 2007, but Brussels has repeatedly stressed that accession will be delayed by a year if both countries cannot prove that reforms promised during negotiations are up to scratch.
