All heroes from Hans Christian Andersen fairytales came alive on Sofia stage as Bulgaria joined the world in marking the 200th birthday of the great story teller.
Bulgarian children from different theatrical groups staged different performances of Andersen's The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl." The Danish Embassy in Bulgaria and Sofia University "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" organized the special fairytale fest.
Over the next several months, celebrations and cultural events will be held around the globe to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth on April 2, 1805, of the immortal storyteller.
The Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation is promoting theatrical productions, musical concerts, and television and film events in honor of the author of "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Match Girl," "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and more than 200 other fairy tales.
Bulgaria marks the anniversary by holding "A decade of the fairy tale 1995-2005", to culminate in an international scientific conference, organized under the aegis of Sofia University and Denmark's Embassy in Sofia.
