A group of Bulgarian executives and representatives of civic and nongovernmental organizations, entrepreneurs and experts sent an open letter in defense of Alexander Bozhkov, former Deputy Prime Minister.

The letter is addressed to the Chief Prosecutor and the Justice Minister.

The people who signed the letter express their concern about the developing campaign against Alexander Bozhkov. The letter points out that Mr. Bozkov have represented Bulgaria at many international conferences and forums. It is conceded that it is natural for the Prosecution to seek to bring to justice all those who commit illegal actions, but the accused also has the right to defend himself.

What Bozhkov’s supporters object to is the psychological pressure he is systematically put under.

They underscore their respect for the Bulgarian legal system and the supremacy of law in Bulgaria. Among the points they object to is the leak of information on allegations before the end of the case and the unjustified ban on travels abroad of such a well-known person. Those who have signed the letter call on the magistrates to fulfill their duties within reasonable terms. They appeal to the media to guarantee the observance of human rights and freedoms in the country.
