Ailing Pope John II appeared at his apartment window in the Vatican to offer a silent blessing after the solemn Easter Mess serviced by one of his cardinals. The Pope's "Urbi et Orbi" message - to Rome and to the world - was read on his behalf for the first time in his 26-year pontificate. The pontiff did not attend the Easter Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square, celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican secretary of state. Christians around the world marked Easter Day, one of the most important events in their religious calendar.
