GREECE AND RUSSIA TO PRESS FOR OIL PIPELINE BURGAS-ALEXANDROUPOLIS

Athens Daily Vima published an article on the visit of Russian president Putin in Athens, starting on December 6 under the title “President Putin’s Greek business, what he wants to sell and what he will buy”.

Another Greek newspaper Naftemporiki commented that Greece and Russia, which have the same positions in connection with the oil pipeline will press Bulgaria for the setting up of a joint company Trans Balkan Oil Pipeline. The newspaper points out that the Russian President is accompanied by the directors of Russia’s two biggest energy companies – Gasprom and LUKoil. The oil pipeline Burgas –Alexandroupolis is said to be one of the main topics to be discussed during the visit.

Kathimerini, Greece’s most respected daily newspaper, expressed the opinion that Putin’s visit takes place under very favourable conditions.

"Greece and Russia are in favor of expanding energy cooperation," Putin told the Greek media shortly before his arrival.

Both countries are interested in an oil pipeline that would link the Aegean and Black Seas through Bulgaria.

The 285-kilometer (178-mile) pipeline would link the ports of Burgas in Bulgaria and Alexandroupolis in northern Greece, allowing Russia to export oil through the Black Sea while bypassing the crowded and dangerous Bosporus in Turkey.

The six-year-old project has been stalled by a wide range of technical and economic disputes and doubts about its efficiency.
