New Mobile Virus on the Loose

Finnish security company F-Secure has announced the increased threat of a global mobile phone virus.

The new virus named Commwarrior can spread globally via the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and also by replicating through Bluetooth technology, the company announced.

The malicious code runs on the Symbian Series 60 smartphone operating system and can spread using multimedia messages that include an image, audio or video that is sent from one phone to another or by e-mail.

Basically, once infected the virus tries to replicate itself by sending multimedia messages to people on the phone's contacts list, which eventually drains the phone's battery.

To stop the spread, the company urges that mobile phone users not to click on the download of an unknown message. None of today's mobile viruses can install themselves without the user accepting the standard security warnings.
